windows phone 7

Stephen Fry, who described himself as "an amateur – which as you know is the French for lover", said that he has been trying a Windows Phone 7 handset for the past week

The writer and broadcaster said that while he "made no secret of what the chaps – and chappesses – at Cupertino [Apple's headquarters] have done since 2007, when I heard Steve Ballmer [CEO of Microsoft] use the word 'delight' about what this phone should do, I thought 'What joy there is in heaven when one sinner doth repent'."

The real test, Fry told the Guardian, would be whether he transferred his own SIM card from his iPhone to the Windows Phone 7 device. "I think I probably will, at least for a while."

What pleased him about the device was that Microsoft had finally thrown off the thinking that people are "one thing when they're outside work, and another when they've gone through the swipe barrier" – because it was that thinking which led to boring interface designs.

Instead, Microsoft had embraced the average person rather than the corporate one: "Now, they get it: that all human beings are human beings first. You don't judge the machines you use, or the houses you live in by listing their functions. The first thing you do is say how you feel about your office; when you buy a house, you do it essentially on the feeling."

As to the suggestion that people might accuse him of being fickle (and he insisted he was not paid to speak at the event in London), he said: "If I were Jeremy Clarkson, I could say 'I love the new Ferrari!' one week, and nobody would have a problem if the next week he said 'I love the new Audi!' It's the same with this. I just love technology."

Apple iPod nano (latest new music device)

Apple's new iPod nano is a dramatic and perhaps ill-advised departure from the design of previous modelsiPod nano

Oh Apple, what have you done to our beloved iPod nano? If it ain't broke, don't fix it, as the saying goes.

Historically, the nano (and before that, the iPod mini) have always been miniature versions of the iPod – a similar form factor, but with less storage capacity. Sure, Apple has tweaked this winning formula over time – doing away with the click-wheel, introducing a range of multi-coloured nanos, conjuring up a stubbier, chubbier version, and even adding in an HD video camera – but the overall nano concept has remained the same; it’s like an iPod, just smaller.

The new iPod nano has undergone a dramatic makeover: gone is the familiar shape of old, replaced instead with a form factor that owes more to the iPod shuffle than the iPod classic; the tiny 1.5in screen is touch-enabled, so a tap of the finger sends you whizzing through menu systems and album art; and the emphasis is firmly back on music, rather than on shooting videos or watching films.

This new nano feels like an over-priced iPod shuffle with a screen, rather than a discrete product in its own right. It also feels like a poor relation to the iPod touch. As such, it risks falling between two stools.

Consumers can choose between an 8GB (£129) or 16GB (£159) model in a variety of colours. I think
it’s telling that Apple hasn’t introduced a 16GB version of its iPod touch, for around the £200 mark – it’s not hard to imagine such a device cannibalising sales of the iPod nano.

That’s not to say the nano is a horrible device to use; Apple should be applauded for creating such a slick, easy-to-use touch-screen interface on such a diminutive product.

For some, the nano's emphasis on simple music playback, rather than gimmicks such as recording or watching films, will be a huge plus point. Moreover, its excellent battery life and compact size make it an indispensable exercise companion for runners and keep-fit fanatics, particularly with Nike Plus and a pedometer built in to the device.

But the fundamental problem, for me at least, is that it doesn’t feel like an iPod. It lacks the cheap and cheerful charm of the shuffle, and the premium lustre of the touch. It feels as though you are paying extra money just for the privilege of tapping a touch-screen rather than clicking a button.

In short, it feels like the sort of device other companies churn out when they are trying to emulate Apple's Midas touch.

While you cannot fault the new iPod nano for its ease of use, I think it has lost something in its redesign;
it’s lost a vital connection with its history and heritage, and a sense of its place within the Apple ecosystem.

The new iPod nano is eminently usable, but it’s also completely forgettable. It’s not hard to see why the iPod touch is now Apple’s best-selling music device.

A Blackberry Look-Alike - The Sony Ericsson Aspen

Windows finally got its act right with its third dot-dot iteration of the Windows Mobile 6.5 into the WinMo 6.5.3, putting in the much awaited finger-friendly user interface and multitouch support that should have been there last October.

Better late the never, as they say. But no matter, it may not be able to stem the year-on-year decline of the Windows Mobile OS with just 8% of the worldwide market share of smartphone platforms. And what about the world's first smartphone to run on it? Who else but the Sony Ericsson Aspen, formerly known as the Sony Ericsson Faith.

Sony probably had a change of mind to use another name on its recent launch so that the market won't get the hint that it should put more faith on the handset or its OS.

The Aspen also figures as a "green" handset and the latest addition to the GreenHeart range of phone from Sony Ericsson. That means it has eco-friendly features on the side to better compete with other "green" mobiles phone emerging from LG, Samsung and Motorola.

Looking Like A Blackberry but is not

Sporting what is a first for the Japanese mobile phone maker - a QWERTY candy bar touchscreen form factor, the Aspen harks back to the famous Blackberry form but takes a stylish turn for a more distinctive look and feel, especially with its silver white version; (the other is plain Ivory Black). Other than that, everything else takes a downhill set of features that puts it on the same league as most other low-end smartphones in the market. Take a look at its capable but less than remarkable features

Hardware-wise, the Aspen is your familiar quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) on 2G and a triple band UMTS (/900/2100) on 3G with HSDPA/HSUPA data connectivity for fast internet access. It measure 117 x 60 x 12.5mm and weights 130g making it not so pocket-friendly.

It has a 2.4-inch display typical for Blackberry-type handsets and has a mere QVGA resolution and the usual Windows-limited 65k color support. There's an accelerometer which is nearly useless in this form factor. There's the usual local data connectivity with WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, microUSB 2.0 and 3.5mm jack. There's also a rudimentary 3.2-megapixel fixed focus camera with video recording. All these hardware features can be found even in mid-priced feature phones. So what gives? Not much.

Software-wise, it's also a social networking handset that has instant access to Windows Live Messenger and Facebook right from its homescreen. Again, sounds familiar with many feature phones with SNS facility. Good thing it at least comes with an A-GPS receiver is supported with Google Maps. Its multimedia feature is as expected from Sony's Walkman heritage with media browsers that support music, photos and videos. It also gets PlayNow apps for games and new music.

Conclusion

Much as we love its Blackberry-ish look and feel with a distinctly Sony-Ericssonian flair, we don't see much compelling reason to get it over many other Blackberry-like handsets on the market. Slated to become available by the second quarter of 2010, the Sony Ericsson Aspen can't aspire to be in the mid-priced smartphone level with its so-so feature set. With little pricing information, we won't be surprised if the major carriers offer it free of charge on a 15 to 20 per month 12-18 month contract.
